THE SQL SERVER ENCRYPTION SURVEY—2019

In 2019, Townsend Security had a chance to participate in the 21st annual PASS Summit in Seattle as an exhibitor. While there, they had an opportunity to ask attendees about their company's encryption and key management practices. In total, 102 people participated in the survey. 

Here are some key findings: 

  • Roughly 43% of respondents were not or were not sure if they were encrypting any of their at-rest data
  • About 20% of businesses surveyed were using pre-2012 SQL Server
  • Only 45% of databases used offer Transparent Data Encryption 
  • About 30% of other databases used are Oracle
  • 49% of of businesses have at least some data stored in the cloud 
  • 45% of small businesses may not use any data-at-rest encryption 
  • 82% of respondents admit they do not or they do not know if they use any encryption key management
